I disagree on this point. First of all, some spiritual folks don't want others to
know that they are interested in divination. So if those who know you
best have no idea that you wish to learn how to read cards, then how
would they know to buy tarot cards for you. Second of all, to buy
tarot deck is a very personal matter. What is beautiful to me may be a
wasted purchase if the recipient just doesn't connect with the deck. I
do recommend the Rider Waite tarot deck for those looking to buy tarot
cards for the first time. Though the Rider Waite deck is not the most
attractive deck, it is the most commonly used deck and will often be the
tarot deck referred to in any beginner's tarot class or book. As you learn how
to read tarot cards and feel confident in your abilities, you may feel
drawn to other decks. This is what I suggest beginners do. Start with
the Rider Waite deck and take some classes. Study your deck thoroughly
and get enough confidence to give readings to others. As you grow
comfortable with your intuition to divine using tarot cards, you now
have the ability to learn other decks more easily. If you want to buy tarot cards that are more "you", choose something that reflects your path or a subject that you
feel drawn to such as: Native American, Fairy, Celtic, Vampire etc...
What you have learned from the Rider Waite deck will make understanding
a deck that doesn't have much information on it, much easier. You will
know how to study the cards for colors, symbolism, numerology and
develop your skills with this new deck.
