Authentic Bayberry Candle and Bayberry Legend

authentic bayberry candle with real bayberry waxLegend of the Bayberry Candle Poem

This bayberry candle comes from a friend
so on Christmas eve burn it down to the end.
For a bayberry candle burned to the socket,
will bring joy to the heart and gold to the pocket.

New and improved real bayberry candles!!!! They now burn longer and the bottom is fluted to fit into a candle holder better.

My traditional bayberry candles are perfect for Christmas eve, Yule or New Years Eve! I hand dip my own authentic bayberry tapers for holiday gift giving. I include the legend of the bayberry candle poem. I tie a primitive fabric bow around them for a country Christmas touch.  These traditional Christmas tapers are made from natural real bayberry wax. The only additive I use is natural beeswax to keep the brittle bayberry wax from cracking. Authentic bayberry wax  is a beautiful olive green color and imparts a natural herbal type of aroma. I have found many wholesale suppliers who claim to have authentic bayberry candles. I can tell by the color of the candle and the appearance of the wax, that it is not genuine bayberry wax. For this reason, I make my own tapers so you are guaranteed that you are getting authentic bayberry candles.

Where did the bayberry candle legend originate?

bayberry candle traditionWhen the first settlers arrived on our shores, every moment was one of survival. Everything was in short supply including candles. Generally candles were made of tallow (animal fat) which tend to smoke and give off an odor. They can turn rancid as well. It didn't take long for the early colonists to discover that the abundant bayberry bush had berries that would give off a waxy residue when boiled. They learned to collect and save the bayberry wax that would rise to the surface of the water and make them into taper candles. The bayberry tapers burned longer and cleaner than the tallow version. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of bayberries to make enough wax to make a single taper. These bayberry tapers were a real treasure to the colonists who saved them for special occasions. To have a bayberry candle was a luxury to be saved and relished. It became the tradition to burn your bayberry candle on Christmas or New Years eve to bring blessings of abundance in the coming year. It is not known who actually came up with the traditional bayberry candle poem. But the tradition continues to this day.

It is believed that you should light your bayberry candle on the eve of your holiday of choice (or all of them as I do) and allow it to burn completely until it goes out on it's own. I include the bayberry poem, history and legend with every authentic bayberry taper. My bayberry tapers have about a 6 hour burn time so please allow enough time for it to burn itself out before bedtime.

Keep this wonderful magical holiday tradition alive! Share the bayberry candle tradition with others.

Key features of traditional bayberry candles:

Please note that you should place the bayberry taper and it's holder on a plate to protect surfaces because they will drip. I can't make a dripless candle without using paraffin. I want to keep my bayberry candles authentic to the tradition.

Bayberry Scented Candles

For those looking for the aroma of bayberry, I offer these scented candles. I do add a bit of bayberry wax to them during the holiday season for those following the tradition.

What is the difference between traditional bayberry candles and scented bayberry candles?

I often get customers who ask if I have any bayberry candles in stock. I always ask if they want traditional or scented. And they all ask what the difference is.

Price... bayberry wax is very rare as a single berry only gives off a minute amount of wax.

Tradition... read the tradition above to help you choose what it is that you want. If you want the aroma, use the candles below. If you want to follow the colonial tradition, choose the tapers that I make. You can also choose both. Use the tapers for the tradition and still get that lovely holiday fragrance.

Real bayberry wax has a very faint herbal aroma. In fact, it doesn't carry well enough to call a fragrance. So somewhere down the line, someone came up with their interpretation of what a bayberry candle should smell like. There are many variations... some are more like a berry aroma... some are spicy. But the fragrance that I work with smells somewhat like a freshly cut pine bow. Of all the scents I've sampled, I love this one. In fact, it's one of the few scents I still like after 20 years in candlemaking.
