Legend of the Bayberry Candle Poem

This bayberry candle comes from a friend
so on Christmas eve burn it down to the end.
For a bayberry candle burned to the socket,
will bring joy to the heart and gold to the pocket.

My traditional bayberry candles are perfect for Christmas eve, Yule or New Years Eve! I hand dip my own authentic bayberry tapers for holiday gift giving. I include the legend of the bayberry candle poem. I tie a primitive fabric bow around them for a country Christmas touch.  These traditional Christmas tapers are made from natural real bayberry wax. The only additive I use is natural beeswax to keep the brittle bayberry wax from cracking. Authentic bayberry wax  is a beautiful olive green color and imparts a natural herbal type of aroma. I have found many wholesale suppliers who claim to have authentic bayberry candles. I can tell by the color of the candle and the appearance of the wax, that it is not genuine bayberry wax. For this reason, I make my own tapers so you are guaranteed that you are getting authentic bayberry candles. If you have purchased bayberry candles from me in the past, you will notice that I now am offering a 12 hour votive. This is a much safer option than a taper candle.

Where did the bayberry candle legend originate?

When the first settlers arrived on our shores, every moment was one of survival. Everything was in short supply including candles. Generally candles were made of tallow (animal fat) which tend to smoke and give off an odor. They can turn rancid as well. It didn't take long for the early colonists to discover that the abundant bayberry bush had berries that would give off a waxy residue when boiled. They learned to collect and save the bayberry wax that would rise to the surface of the water and make them into taper candles. The bayberry tapers burned longer and cleaner than the tallow version. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of bayberries to make enough wax to make a single taper. These bayberry tapers were a real treasure to the colonists who saved them for special occasions. To have a bayberry candle was a luxury to be saved and relished. It became the tradition to burn your bayberry candle on Christmas or New Years eve to bring blessings of abundance in the coming year. It is not known who actually came up with the traditional bayberry candle poem. But the tradition continues to this day.

It is believed that you should light your bayberry candle on the eve of your holiday of choice (or all of them as I do) and allow it to burn completely until it goes out on it's own. I include the bayberry poem, history and legend with every authentic bayberry taper. My bayberry tapers have about a 6 hour burn time so please allow enough time for it to burn itself out before bedtime.

Keep this wonderful magical holiday tradition alive! Share the bayberry candle tradition with others.

Key features of traditional bayberry candles:

  •  All natural real bayberry wax with beeswax added so it's less brittle and can tolerate shipping.
  •  Burning a bayberry taper candle on Christmas eve or New Year's eve is said to bring good fortune.
  •  Wrapped in cellophane with a rustic fabric bow for gift giving.
  •  I include the traditional Bayberry candle poem and the bayberry history and lore.
  •  I also offer bayberry scented candles on other candle pages that are less expensive but do not contain bayberry wax.
  •  authentic bayberry wax prosperity spell candle / bayberry wax money spell candle
  • you can use a bayberry candle any day of the year to celebrate a new endeavor such as: birthday, wedding, start of a new business or job, retirement, graduation, anniversary, divorce (yes... worthy of celebration), full moon, solstice, any milestone that you want to bring blessings into the time that follows

Please note that you should place the bayberry taper and it's holder on a plate to protect surfaces because they will drip. I can't make a dripless candle without using paraffin. I want to keep my bayberry candles authentic to the tradition.

Bayberry 12 Hour Votive Candle

If you have purchased bayberry candles from me in the past, please consider my latest addition... real bayberry wax votive candles. These are a much safer option than the taper candles.  Bayberry taper candles are less stable and will drip wax. My bayberry wax votives will burn about 12 - 15 hours but you must use a votive holder like the one pictured. With the tapers, you would have a lot of wasted wax that drips. The votive cup captures all of the bayberry wax for it to be utilized by the flame. The votive cup creates improves the burn quality. I use only genuine bayberry wax with beeswax as an additive. Authentic bayberry wax is extremely dry and brittle and wouldn't withstand shipping without beeswax which is very strong and flexible.

My bayberry candles are a standard 2" votive and should fit and standard votive cup. Any other container may not contain the bayberry wax enough to feed the flame with the melted wax.

Please not that my bayberry candles are all rustic in appearance. Bayberry wax is incredibly difficult to work with which is why you won't find candles in larger sizes. The wicks can't burn the hard bayberry wax. You may find cracks, rough places and white film. These are all typical for authentic bayberry wax but they do not affect burn quality. I have not tried to create a perfect bayberry candle because I want them to look home made rather than machine made. It adds to the charm of this lovely holiday tradition.

Also note that my bayberry candles are unscented. Genuine bayberry wax gives off very little aroma. I have chosen to not add scent to them to stay as authentic as I can to what the colonists would have used. I do offer bayberry scented candles for those wanting a scented candle over the traditional bayberry wax. I have included a link at the bottom of this page.

all of my bayberry candles include a detailed history, lore and bayberry candle poem.

My bayberry taper candles need a good taper candle holder it hold it securely while it burns. This holder will not protect the surface that your candle sits upon. You will need to put a plate under it to collect the melted wax.

Bayberry candles can't be made dripless and stay natural. To do that, I would have to add a layer of paraffin. I would rather stay true to tradition.

Colonial people would have gathered the dripped wax and buried it to further aid in bringing good luck by returning the spent bayberry wax back to nature.

Many of us grew up with bayberry "scented" candles which were burned in celebration of the bayberry candle tradition. I did as well. It was not until years later when people kept asking me if I made them that piqued my curiosity behind this practice. When I researched it, I found the story behind the tradition was based on actual bayberry wax candles. Some customers want to follow the tradition and use the candles made from the genuine bayberry wax. Other customers want that old familiar aroma that grew to be their own family tradition. Many of my customers by both. My advice to you is to decide what will have the most significance for your holidays. Neither candle is the better choice. It's about what celebrating a holiday tradition does for your family. The bayberry candle is a celebration of life and family.
